Start up Power required for various Power plants

Start up power:

Start up power is required for the plant is the power required to start the various electrical auxiliaries in the plant.
Start up power for different power plants are listed below
  • Thermal and Nuclear power plant requires 7% to 8% of the total unit power to start the different auxiliaries in the plant and produce electricity
  • Hydro Power plant requires 0.5% to 1% of the full unit power to start
  • Gas Power plants requires around 1.5% to 2% of full unit power

Thermal and Nuclear plants will have high start up power to run the plant because these plants contain many electrical auxiliaries. For example for Thermal Power plant contains many electrical motors and drives to run ID Fan, FD fans, Ball mills, Conveyors, crushing machines, Electro Static Precipitators and many electrical auxiliaries. Hydro plants require very little auxiliaries as the water flow under gravity and runs the turbines. Gas   power plants also contains very little electrical auxiliaries and compact in size compared to thermal power plant.
